Helpful Cleaning Tips

Clean Behind Kitchen Appliances

Refrigerator: Pull your refrigerator out from the wall, taking care not to pull it so far that you pull the icemaker water line or elstove connection from the wall. Vacuum the refrigerator coils thoroughly, as well as the floor. Using Windex and paper towels, clean the floor and the back of the refrigerator and put it back into place. Don't forget to clean the top of the refrigerator.

Oven and stove: Pull the range away from the wall and vacuum the back of it, clean the backsplash with Windex and paper towels, as well as the floor and the back of the stove. Put the range back in place and then clean the top of the stove. If you've a glass-top stove, use specially formulated cleaner to clean the glass top. Don't forget to clean the bottom drawer of the stove.

Dishwasher: Unless you have a free-standing dishwasher, you cannot easily clean behind it without completely removing the unit from underneath your countertop. It is advisable to let a professional remove your dishwasher if you feel that you need to clean behind it

Cleaning Kitchen Cabinets

Grime and dust can easily build up on your cabinets, especially in rooms like the kitchen, where they are exposed to grease and food particles. Because of the problem with grease, you will want to avoid cleaning your cabinets with normal wood cleaner, and instead use a cleaner that is meant to cut grease, like a multi-purpose cleaner or dishwashing soap. Other simpler options are solutions of vinegar and water (half and half) or baking soda and water (form a paste). No matter what cleaner or solution you use, make sure to test it on a small hidden area to make sure that it will not discolor your cabinets. After you thoroughly clean the cabinets and remove the grease, you can polish them with an appropriate wood cleaner (if they are made of wood) to make them shine. If you clean regularly, you should be able to just wipe down your cabinets with warm water; use the multi-purpose cleaner on occasion to really get it clean.

Entertaining Guests

The best way to be prepared to is to place some cleaning supplies under the kitchen sink. Make sure you have a clean rag, paper towels, and an all purpose cleaner. Every bathroom should also be equipped with a toilet bowl brush. That way, if you find out at the last minute that you have to clean out the bathroom, you will not have to go around trying to find all the cleaning supplies that you need.

Cleaning Bathroom Tile Naturally

Spray straight vinegar onto the tile and scrub with a damp sponge. There's no need to rinse the vinegar away; it will evaporate and leave no residue or smell. If the tile looks clean, great; you're done.

If it's still dirty, make a paste with equal parts water, baking soda, and salt. Rub this paste onto the tile with the sponge. When done, rinse out the sponge and use it to remove the paste residue from the tile.

Rinse sponge again and dip it in lemon juice. Coat the tile that you've just cleaned. The lemon juice will remove traces of soap and oils and make the tile look shiny and beautiful. This also does not need to be rinsed off.

Hardwood Floors

Sweep the floor often. Unlike carpet floors, hardwood floors allow dust and dirt to move around the ground, causing the floor to require sweeping to keep it looking clean. Simply use a broom every day or so to prevent dirt and dust build up.

Mop the area. Depending on the type of flooring, choose an appropriate solution and mop the area according to package directions. You may also want to try a natural or homemade mixture, like using vinegar for example. Depending on the level of traffic in the area, you may want to mop once a week or so.

Have professionals clean the floor. You might need some intense work done on your hardwood floors at some point, like buffing, waxing, or refinishing. You might be able to rent machines to do this work yourself, or you might want to hire a professional.

Use rugs and floor mats to help reduce the wear on your floor. Although hardwood flooring is beautiful and durable, it can still become damaged, especially in high-traffic areas of the home.

Avoid using harsh cleaners or chemicals on hardwood floors. Instead, use a manufacturer-recommended cleaner or just soapy water (depending on the material). Look for a cleaner that won't leave a film on your floor.
